James Allen Sanders, Sr. fondly known as "Baby James" to his brothers and sisters, entered
this life on August 4, 1928. Born in Lexington, Mississippi, he was the tenth child resulting from
the union of Arthur, Sr. and Versie Thurmond Sanders. His parents and six siblings preceded
him in death.
James received his education in Mississippi. Later he moved to Chicago, Illinois where he met
Catherine Hicks whom he wed on February 19, 1951. In their forty plus years of marriage, James
and Catherine were blessed with two children: James, Jr. and Carmen Renee. Catherine and
James Jr. preceded him in death in 1992 and 1990, respectively.
Less than three weeks after his wedding, James began a two year tour of duty in the United
States Army on March 8, 1951. After his honorable discharge he worked as a taxi cab driver until
1954 when he was hired at National Can Company. James worked there until he retired in 1990.
In his spare time James worked on cars with his brothers Willie and Henry. He was also an avid
bowler participating in regular weekly leagues and often traveling to many states to bowl in
tournaments. In the 1960's James joined the John Jones Lodge #7, F&AM serving in various
offices, including two years as Worshipful Master.
James was a quiet and amiable man, easy to get along with and never making a fuss about
anything. On February 1, 2006 he entered eternity the same way....quietly, without making a fuss.
Still cherishing warm memories are his daughter, Carmen (Robert) Banks; godson, Barry Kelly,
Jr.; brothers: John (Mary) of Oakland, California, Benjamin (Ora) of Detroit, Michigan, and Henry
(Tessie) of Chicago, Illinois; sisters: Versie Williams of Chicago, Illinois and Flora (Jim)
Mayweathers of Rockville Centre, New York; a special brother-in-law who was more like a
brother, Adell Oliphant of Willingboro, New Jersey; granddaughters: Caeana Sanders and
Eniwetok Wright along with a countless number of other relatives and friends.
